The New SEO Frontier: Why Your Website Needs an llms.txt File (and How to Generate One)

Share on:

For the last two decades, Marketing Managers have been obsessed with SEO (Search Engine Optimisation). The goal was simple: rank high on Google so humans can find you.

But in 2025, user behaviour has shifted.

Potential customers aren't just Googling keywords anymore; they are asking questions to AI models like ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity. They are asking: "Who is the best design agency in Melbourne?" or "Summarise the services of [Your Company]."

This has given rise to a new discipline: AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation).

The challenge? While your website is built for humans and Google crawlers, it isn't always easy for an AI to digest. Sometimes AI models "hallucinate" incorrect information about your pricing, services, or location because they can't effectively parse your site's structure.

Webflow has just released a game-changing feature to fix this: The llms.txt file.

Here is what it is, why your brand needs it, and how to create one for free using our new tool.

What is an llms.txt file?

Think of llms.txt as a "Briefing Document" specifically for robots.

You likely already have a sitemap.xml which helps Google find your pages. An llms.txt file is similar, but instead of just listing URLs, it provides a curated, plain-text overview of your organisation.

It tells Large Language Models (LLMs):

  1. Who you are (Your core value proposition).
  2. What you do (Your services and products).
  3. Where to find the proof (Direct links to your most important documentation, case studies, or pricing).

Unlike a standard webpage which is full of marketing fluff, navigation bars, and layout code, this file is pure signal, zero noise. It helps AI models "reason" about your content so they can answer user questions accurately.

Why Marketing Managers Should Care

You might be thinking, "Do I really need another file on my website?"

The answer is yes, and here is why: Control.

If you do not provide an llms.txt file, AI models will scrape your site and make their best guess at what matters. They might reference an old blog post instead of your new service page, or miss your unique selling proposition entirely.

By uploading this file, you are essentially handing the AI a script. You are ensuring that when a user asks ChatGPT about your brand, the answer is derived from the facts you provided.

The Benefits of llms.txt:

  • Better AI Citations: Increases the chance of your site being cited as a source in AI answers.
  • Accurate Summaries: Ensures AI tools summarise your business offerings correctly.
  • Future Proofing: As search moves towards "Chat," this file ensures your brand remains visible.

The Problem: Writing One is Tricky

While Webflow has made it easy to upload the file, writing one requires a specific structure. It needs to be concise, formatted in Markdown, and technically structured in a way that LLMs prefer.

Most marketing teams don't have the time to hand-code a text file or study the documentation on LLM file standards.

So, we built a tool to do it for you.

Introducing the IGNITE llms.txt Generator

To help our clients and the wider Webflow community adapt to this shift in search, we have built a CustomGPT that generates a perfect llms.txt starting point for your business.

How it works:

  1. Open the generator.
  2. Paste in your website URL or a summary of your business.
  3. The AI will generate a formatted, ready-to-use text file.

You can then tweak the text to ensure it matches your tone, save it, and you are ready to go.

How to Upload to Webflow (Step-by-Step)

Once you have generated your file using our tool, adding it to Webflow is incredibly simple. This feature is now native to the platform.

  1. Save your file: Ensure your generated text is saved as a plain text file named llms.txt.
  2. Open Settings: Go to your Webflow Project Settings.
  3. Go to SEO: Click on the SEO tab.
  4. Scroll Down: Find the new section titled "Upload an llms.txt file".
  5. Upload: Click the upload button and select your file.
  6. Publish: Publish your site.

That’s it. Your file will now be live at yourdomain.com/llms.txt. It works silently in the background, guiding AI models without affecting your human visitors.

Summary

The way the world accesses information is changing. We are moving from a world of "10 blue links" to a world of instant answers.

Implementing an llms.txt file is a low-effort, high-impact way to ensure your brand is ready for the AI era. It costs nothing to implement, but the cost of ignoring it could mean being invisible in the next generation of search.
